Review

The Velar has its faults but is a stylish, refined and seriously appealing SUV. It’s best to stick to the cheaper engines and trims, though; once you start moving farther up the range the price pushes into the realms of better-resolved cars, such as the Audi Q8 and BMW X6.

Trim: S

S trim has a slightly higher resale value that in part offsets the extra initial outlay. It also adds the 14-way powered front seats, leather seat trim, an upgraded 10-speaker/ 380-watt stereo, in-built sat-nav, premium LED headlights, power-folding door mirrors, 19in alloy wheels and a powered tailgate, so we think it's the trim to buy.

Engine: 2.0 D240

This 237bhp diesel engine is decently refined for a four-cylinder unit and has a reasonable amount of punch, but can’t match the six-cylinder diesel on either front.
