The Velar is a stylish, refined and seriously appealing Coupe SUV. It’s best to stick to the cheaper engines – including the award-winning D180 – and trims, though; once you start moving farther up the range it pushes the price into the realms of better-resolved cars, such as the Audi Q8 and BMW X6.get the best price
S trim has a slightly higher resale value that, in part, offsets the extra initial outlay. It also adds the 14-way powered front seats, leather seat trim, an upgraded 10-speaker/ 380-watt stereo, traffic sign recognition, a Wi-Fi hotspot, in-built sat-nav, premium LED headlights, power-folding door mirrors, 19in alloy wheels and a powered tailgate, so we think it's the trim to buy.

An output of 248bhp might sound like a decent amount of shove, but in a car as big as the Velar, it never feels particularly fast. Sure, on paper it’s quicker than the D180, lolloping from 0-62mph nearly two seconds quicker, but the petrol needs to be worked hard before it actually feels as brisk as the numbers suggest. It doesn’t match the low-down pulling power of the D180, which feels more urgent when moving away from a standstill. At least the P250’s engine is smooth, with a power delivery with no peaks or troughs.
