Review

The Range Rover Velar is a stylish, refined and seriously appealing coupé SUV. Keep to small wheels and it's a comfy companion while our favoured S trim gets plenty of kit. It’s best to stick to the cheaper trims and engines; once you start moving up the range, the price rises into the realms of better-resolved cars, such as the Audi Q8 and BMW X6.

SE gets 20in wheels, adaptive Matrix LED headlights, rear cross-traffic alert, a gesture-controlled powered tailgate, a 12.3in digital instrument cluster and an even more powerful stereo. Tempting if you’re thinking of adding a few options to S.

This plug-in hybrid can travel up to 33 miles on electricity alone and is also the fastest Velar in the range. It’s pretty pricey and not quite as effortless as the D300 diesel, though.
