Review

The Velar has its faults but is a stylish, refined and seriously appealing SUV. It’s best to stick to the cheaper engines and trims, though; once you start moving farther up the range the price pushes into the realms of better-resolved cars, such as the Audi Q8 and BMW X6.

Trim: HSE

Top-of-the-line HSE gets 21in wheels, 20-way electrically adjustable seats finished in softer leather, leather on the dashboard and doors, adaptive cruise control and park assist. Luxurious but pricey.

Engine: 3.0 D300

We like the 296bhp 3.0-litre V6 diesel for effortless performance. It may not be as outright fast as some of the petrols, but it pulls harder from low revs and can still officially manage 0-62mph in a hot hatch-rivalling 6.7sec. For everyday use, it’s definitely a good fit for the Velar.
