The model

Read full land-rover Range Rover review

The Range Rover is an expensive used car, but it’s a very capable one. It’s comfortable to drive on the road and impressive when it goes off it, plus it has a line-up of smooth yet powerful engines. Its luxurious and spacious interior is great too, especially with the seven-seater option in the LWB version. Land Rover’s reliability record remains a concern, though.

The trim

This entry-level trim is very well equipped, and it’s the trim we’d stick with. You get a plush leather interior with wood veneers and luxuriously thick carpets, 20-way electrically adjustable seats, along with 21in alloys as standard (they can be swapped for 20in alloys for no cost). Adaptive cruise control with steering assist comes as standard.

The engine

Our favourite engine is the D300. It's a 3.0-litre mild-hybrid straight-six diesel with 296bhp. It's smooth, super torquey so it pulls effortlessly, but when you stretch its legs and rev it out it makes hast with 0-62mph in just 7.4sec. It's fit for purpose whether you're cruising motorways, overtaking along A-roads or towing up to 3500kg. It should average in the region of 35mpg on a run if driven sensibly. Less than that around town. It's also worth noting that an X7 40d is faster and will cost you less.
