The turbocharged 99bhp three-cylinder engine does a decent job of getting the Tipo up to speed in town, but you’ll need to thrash it on faster roads or if you have a car load of people in it.

City Life trim is our chosen trim because it adds a few extra niceties to the entry-level Tipo trim. They include larger 17in alloy wheels, LED headlights, automatic air conditioning, a 7.0in digital instrument cluster, adaptive cruise control, tinted rear windows, a third rear headrest and body coloured wing mirrors. 

City Life

This spec doesn’t really add anything above the Life except bigger 18in alloy wheels and a parking pack that adds front parking sensors and a reversing camera.

City Sport

Our preferred spec has LED headlights, 17in alloy wheels, a 7.0in touchscreen with smartphone capabilities, dual-zone climate control, automatic lights and wipers, and adaptive cruise control.

Life

If you want to keep costs down, entry-level Tipo trim is the one for you. While it’s fairly basic, it still comes with everything you need, including 16in steel wheels, basic air-con, cruise control, a 7.0in touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, DAB radio and Bluetooth, rear parking sensors and electronically adjustable and heated wing mirrors.

Hatchback

Modern Fiats fall into two categories: the retro models and those with more functional designs.

Cars in the first camp appeal to the heart and include the 124 Spider sports car and the 500 series: a hatchback, a convertible, an SUV and two MPVs.

By contrast, the remaining models rely on their practicality and attractive pricing, with the Panda city car, Tipo hatchback and Fullback pick-up truck all prime examples.

Fiat can trace its roots back to the 19th century but is now part of the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles group, along with Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Jeep and Maserati.
