This is the only diesel. It's RDE2 compliant and officially averages 50mpg. While its acceleration won’t exactly squash you back in your seat (0-62mph takes 8.5sec), it has more than enough mid-rev oomph for easygoing progress. 

2.0 B4D

This diesel engine is available only with the Cross Country version. It will do 0-62mph in 7.4sec and officially it's capable of averaging 45mpg. It can tow up to 2400kg and comes with four-wheel drive. 

2.0 B5D

If you’re dead set against a diesel but can't stretch to the Recharge T6 plug-in hybrid, this 194bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol is a fine option – indeed, it's our pick. It's pretty quick in a straight line (0-62mph takes 7.9sec) and officially it's capable of averaging around 40mpg, but you'll need to drive it very carefully to hit that in the real world.

2.0 B4P

With 247bhp and a 0-62mph time of 6.9sec (slower if you buy the four-wheel-drive Cross Country) it’s pokey and it pulls well from low revs. It's the entry-level engine in Cross Country. If you're a company car driver looking to save tax, though, you should check out the Recharge T6 plug-in hybrid instead. Officially, the B5 (P) will average 40mpg, which is about the same as the less powerful B4 (P). We saw 30-35mpg from the four-wheel-drive Cross Country and front-wheel-drive versions should better that.  

2.0 B5P

We haven't tried this engine yet but it's capable of 0-62mph in 6.2sec and officially averages 36mpg. It comes with four-wheel drive as standard.

2.0 B6P

We’re yet to try this revised version with a larger 18.8kWh battery pack. We expect it to perform similarly to the outgoing version which - while it doesn’t feel like a rocket ship - is swifter than a 530e, and is of course near-silent when it’s in electric mode. It also shuffles seamlessly between its two power sources.

2.0 T6 [350] RC PHEV Ultimate Dark

The entry-level trim includes heated electrically adjustable front seats, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, adaptive cruise control, four-zone climate control, power-folding mirrors, a heated windscreen, a 13-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, 19in alloy wheels and keyless entry.

Cross Country Plus

Core

Includes 20in wheels, adaptive suspension, rear air-suspension, matrix LED headlights, a head-up display, a panoramic roof, laminated side windows and an 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system.

Volvo is now a true rival to the likes of Audi, BMW, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz, offering an alternative take on premium executive cars to a rapidly growing fanbase.

After a string of strong launches – notably with the Mk2 XC90 and XC60 SUVs – it struck gold in early 2018 when it launched its smallest SUV, the XC40. The good news is that, like many car makers, Volvo now uses the same structure underneath most of its cars – so if they get it right on one model, it usually bodes well for the rest. That’s the case here, with Volvo’s subsequent saloon and estate launches complementing the SUVs and making for a generally extremely appealing line-up.
