The model
Read full reviewThe Mazda CX-5 is one of the best large SUVs you can buy. Why? Well, it may not have the additional practicality of seven seats that a Peugeot 5008 comes with as standard, but it's well priced, very well equipped, safe and classy inside. Stick with the 2.0 petrol in entry-level SE-L trim for the best value for money, although the diesels are well worth a look if you do above average mileage.

The engine
See full engine specsMazda doesn't use turbochargers to boost the performance of its petrol engines. So, even though the 163bhp 2.0 Skyactiv-G 165 has a larger capacity and more power than the Citroën C5 Aircross 1.2 Puretech 130, it's no quicker (it does 0-62mph in 10.3sec) and nowhere near as flexible from low revs. You have to get it to 3000rpm and beyond to release its performance, which makes it harder work because you're changing down gears more often. It's also noisy but the fuel economy is pretty good.
