The Mazda CX-5 is one of the best large SUVs you can buy. Why? Well, it may not have the additional practicality of seven seats that a Peugeot 5008 comes with as standard, but if you don't need the extra seating the CX-5 has plenty of room for five adults and their luggage in its smart, classy interior. It's also very well equipped, including for safety features, and has something of a USP among the non-premium badged large SUVs: it handles really tidily, so will please those of you who enjoy spirited driving. Overall, we think it's a cracking car.

You get a healthy amount of kit even choosing the entry-level SE-L Nav+ model. The highlights include 17in alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive LED headlights, privacy glass, power-folding door mirrors, dual-zone climate control, 40/20/40 split-folding and reclining rear seats. Infotainment includes a 7.0in screen, a DAB radio and Bluetooth, while among the safety features are automatic emergency braking, lane assist, blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert.

A 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol with 163bhp might sound like a plucky devil, but you need to rev it to 6000rpm to develop that amount of power. It does without a turbocharger, you see, so unlike many of its petrol rivals that are thus equipped, there’s precious little low-end shove to help you make easy, relaxing progress. It’s not bad by any means; it just doesn't give the kind of peaky power delivery you expect in a large SUV.
