The Mazda CX-5 is one of the best large SUVs you can buy. Why? Well, while it lacks the additional practicality of seven seats the Peugeot 5008 comes with as standard, it's well priced, very well equipped, safe and classy inside. The 2.0 petrol in entry-level SE-L trim offers the best value for money, but the diesels are well worth a look if you do above average mileage.

On top of SE-L you get 19in alloys, a reversing camera, a powered tailgate, a sunroof, leather seats, which are electrically adjustable and heated in the front, a heated steering wheel, a head-up display, keyless entry and a 10-speaker Bose sound system. Definitely worth looking at if your budget can stretch to it.

Mazda doesn't use turbochargers to boost the performance of its petrol engines. So, even though the 163bhp 2.0 Skyactiv-G 165 has a larger capacity and more power than the Citroën C5 Aircross 1.2 Puretech 130, it's no quicker (it does 0-62mph in 10.3sec) and nowhere near as flexible from low revs. You have to get it to 3000rpm and beyond to release its performance, which makes it harder work because you're changing down gears more often. It's also noisy but the fuel economy is pretty good.
