The Mazda CX-5 is one of the best large SUVs you can buy. Why? Well, it may not have the additional practicality of seven seats that a Peugeot 5008 comes with as standard, but it's well priced, very well equipped, safe and classy inside. Stick with the 2.0 petrol in entry-level SE-L trim for the best value for money, although the diesels are well worth a look if you do above average mileage.

Trim: SE-L

Packed with kit and our pick of the range. On the spec sheet you will find 17in alloy wheels, adaptive cruise control, power-folding door mirrors, LED headlights, driver’s lumbar adjustment, dual-zone climate control and automatic lights and wipers. There’s also an 8.0in infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus lots of standard safety kit, including automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, blind spot monitoring and high beam assist.

Engine: 2.2d

The pick of the diesels. It pulls hard from 1000rpm all the way to the red line, so it actually feels more like a turbocharged petrol than a diesel. Comes with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard and in this guise offers the best fuel economy in the lineup. You can have an auto 'box if you prefer.
