The CX-5 has stability control and six airbags. It also comes with Smart City Brake Support, which can automatically apply the brakes in an emergency to help you avoid an accident or at least minimise the force of the impact.
An optional Safety Pack adds lane-keep assist, blindspot monitoring and adaptive cruise control but, disappointingly, this is available only on range-topping Sport Nav trim.
All this has helped the CX-5 score a maximum five-star rating in its Euro NCAP crash test. Breaking down the category scores, the car has a better adult protection score than a Kodiaq and Audi Q5, and beats the Kodiaq on child protection, too.
Security measures include an alarm and engine immobiliser. Security experts Thatcham Research awarded the CX-5 five out of five for resisting being stolen and four out of five for guarding against being broken into.
