Classy, good to drive and packed with technology, the Mercedes A Class stands among the best premium-badged options in the family car class. Although the entry-level diesel (A180d) makes the most sense for the majority of A Class buyers, don't discount the more powerful A200 petrol or the A250e hybrid. Range-topping AMG Line is tempting, but we'd stick with cheaper Sport trim and spend a few quid on options instead.

Trim: AMG

Again, another no-brainer; there’s one trim level and a load of equipment packs to fine-tune your spec. Standard kit includes auto lights and wipers, two-zone climate control, keyless start, a reversing camera and a pair of 7.0in screens for infotainment and instruments, but you don’t really get any more than in a regular A-Class.

Engine: A35 4Matic Executive

The A35 comes with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol that kicks out 302bhp and 295Ib ft of torque. With 0-62mph coming up in 4.7sec, it’s fast if you're prepared to rev it hard. We just wish it sounded a bit more tuneful for a hot hatchback.
