The model
Read full reviewIt's not cheap, but the Mercedes E-Class Estate is classy and impressively refined. It's also generally comfortable, easy to drive, well equipped and a compelling option in the luxury estate car sector. Crucially, its boot beats the BMW 5 Series Touring's and Volvo V90's for luggage room, although the V90 does have more spacious rear seats. The E300de plug-in hybrid has the best fuel economy of any equivalent PHEV once the battery is depleted.
The trim
See full equipmentWe'd stop at the AMG Line Premium, which adds a 360-degree parking camera, keyless entry, a powered boot lid, 19in alloy wheel and augmented navigation. However, this AMG Line Night Edition Premium Plus adds a panoramic sunroof, 20in alloy wheels, fully electric front seats with memory settings, an electric steering column and a Burmester stereo with 13 speakers and 590 watts.
The engine
See full engine specsThe idea of a 2.0-litre petrol engine might appeal, but it's nowhere as economical as the E220d diesel and not as gutsy so you have to rev it harder. Ultimately, it's just as quick, with 0-62mph in 7.7sec.
