It's not cheap, but the Mercedes E-Class Estate is classy and impressively refined. It's also generally comfortable, easy to drive, well equipped and a compelling option in the luxury estate car sector. Crucially, its boot beats the BMW 5 Series Touring's and Volvo V90's for luggage room, although the V90 does have more spacious rear seats. The E300de plug-in hybrid has the best fuel economy of any equivalent PHEV once the battery is depleted.

We'd stop at the AMG Line Premium, which adds a 360-degree parking camera, keyless entry, a powered boot lid, 19in alloy wheel and augmented navigation. However, this AMG Line Night Edition Premium Plus adds a panoramic sunroof, 20in alloy wheels, fully electric front seats with memory settings, an electric steering column and a Burmester stereo with 13 speakers and 590 watts.

This 191bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine has the lowest CO2 emissions of any non-plug-in E Class and it's RDE2 compliant. It comes with a nine-speed automatic gearbox as standard and is a surprisingly strong and flexible performer, with a 0-62mph time of 7.8sec. It's reasonably quiet and should average 45mpg if you drive it respectfully. It's our pick of the range.
