Our overall rating:
Large premium SUVs don’t sell in the same volumes as small SUVs, but they’re still a very important segment for manufacturers in the UK. This Mercedes GLE goes up against talented competition such as the Audi Q7, Range Rover Sport, Porsche Cayenne, BMW X5 and Volvo XC90.
Engine choices include two very decent diesel options, a 3.0-litre V6 petrol, and an even more powerful V6 petrol-electric hybrid version. There is also the range-topping, and financially scary, V8 5.5-litre bi-turbo petrol 63 S AMG.
Both diesels and the lower-powered V6 petrol model use a nine-speed automatic gearbox, while the hybrid and V8 AMG 63 models get an older, seven-speed auto. Permanent all-wheel-drive is standard across the range.
