Used Mercedes-Benz M-Class 2012-2015 reliability review

Sturdy and strong, the Mercedes-Benz M-Class is a sound alternative to the usual run of luxurious off-roaders

What should I look for in a used Mercedes-Benz M Class?

This is a large car that will have been used in tight urban spaces, so it’s worth looking at the extremities of the car to find any scuffs or dents picked up in car parks and on school runs. Also check the alloy wheels for any kerb damage. Take a look at the underneath of the car for any signs of off-road damage and look on the front of the car for any stone chips.

Check all the electrical equipment carefully, too, because there is a lot of it and repair is expensive. This includes the sat-nav, the electric seats, the rear tailgate and any optional electrical items that may have been specified when the car was new.

Reported problems are remarkably few and owners seem happy with the long-term reliability of their M-Classes. Most concerns centre on gearbox issues and non-engine electrics. The engines are fairly bulletproof and the interior is well made.

The M-Class is no longer on sale, so it didn’t figure in our latest reliability survey. As an indication, the GLC, another Mercedes SUV, finished mid-table. Mercedes as a brand finished in 23rd place out of 32 manufacturers.
