The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is one of the best luxury cars around. It's supremely comfortable and offers all the performance, space and gadgets you could want, although for that last tenth of ride quality and high-speed refinement, the Audi A8 just pips it.

Engine: S450L Grand Ed Rear Lux Lounge

A thoroughly modern engine that uses cutting-edge 48-volt electrics to power an electric compressor and an electric motor, both of which boost low-end power and response. It works, too, giving instant pace off the line while its turbocharger ensures it stays punchy in the mid-range. It’s also smooth to rev, works well with the standard nine-speed auto ‘box and is more economical than the competition. It’s only offered with the long wheelbase body, though.
