Not only is the Mercedes-Benz S-Class packed to the rafters with technology, it’s also a comfortable and exceedingly well-appointed luxury saloon. We’d argue that the Audi A8 is comfier still and has a better built interior, although the S-Class beats it hands down for wow factor. We do wish the interior had a few more physical controls, though, and the S500 petrol is a pricey choice.get the best price

Entry-level AMG Line gets plenty of kit including 19in alloy wheels, air suspension, keyless entry and start, metallic paint, adaptive LED headlights, front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera and a powered bootlid. This 3.0-litre turbocharged straight six petrol engine is assisted by mild-hybrid technology so it has plenty of power from low down in the rev range. Push it harder and it’ll sprint from 0-62mph in a mere 4.9sec while making a cultured six-cylinder growl. More importantly, it’s hushed when you’re pootling around and barely audible at a cruise. Economy in the low to mid 30mpg range isn’t quite as impressive as the diesels, yet it’s still not bad given the performance on offer. Unsurprisingly, it sits in the 37% BIK tax bracket.
