If you’re after an electric car with a long range, enough room for a family and a high level of standard kit, the MG 5 could be the car for you. It’s also comfy, quiet at speed and has punchy acceleration. True, it doesn’t drive as nicely as a similarly priced MX-30 (although it does have a longer range) and it's not as quick as an ID.3, but then it doesn’t cost nearly as much. Go for the longer range 61.1kWh version for the added safety tech and you’ll have a car that’s got a lot going for it due to its tempting price.

Excite trim adds leather seats (heated and electrically adjustable with adjustable lumbar in the front), climate control, silver roof rails, electrically folding mirrors, auto wipers, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and keyless entry. We’d be tempted to keep it cheap and stick with Excite.

You get a 154bhp electric motor in all versions of the 5, so 0-62mph takes a respectable 7.7sec, which is a couple of seconds up on the Peugeot e-208 and Renault Zoe. Go for the 61.1kWh pack over the standard 52.5kWh version and you should see a range of 250 miles according to the official WLTP combined range, compared to 214 miles.
