Ford Fiesta

The Ford Fiesta is currently the best-selling car in the UK. Each month, thousands of people buy one, and with good reason. The Fiesta is one of the best superminis around: it's fun to drive, impressively refined and easy to live with every day, although rivals such as the Vauxhall Corsa and Renault Clio keep the market competitive.

Thanks to its popularity, there are plenty of deals around on both new and used models, meaning a good deal is never far away.

Here are just 10 reasons why you should be considering a Ford Fiesta for your next car.

10 reasons to buy a Ford Fiesta

10. Comfortable for long drives

You sit fairly high up in a Fiesta, and thanks to a supportive seat most drivers will be able to get comfortable easily. It's good for a long motorway slog, too, and two adults will be comfortable in the rear.

9. Small petrol power

There's a wide variety of engines available in the Fiesta, but our pick is the small 1.0-litre petrol with 99bhp. This is a great little engine which offers plenty of punch, low CO2 emissions and very reasonable MPG.

8. Pleasant ride

One of the things we like most about the Fiesta is its big-car sophistication. Its ride, whether on open roads or around town, is sublime. In fact, it's smoother than a lot of the more expensive, premium options in this market.

7. Fun on the road

The Fiesta has become something of a benchmark for how small cars are supposed to drive. Its steering accuracy and sharp responses are more akin to those of a sports car than a small family hatchback. On the right road, it's also fantastic fun.

6. Guaranteed a great price

Put simply, the Fiesta makes great financial sense whether you're buying new or used. Keep an eye out for the plethora of finance offers and discounts from dealers. Running one is relatively cheap, too.

5. No engine noise, unless you want it

Despite its small size, the noise from our favourite 1.0-litre petrol engine settles down to a background hum very quickly and can only really be heard when you work it hard. There's also minimal road and wind noise.

4. Plenty of kit on Zetec models

There are many different trim levels to choose from in the Fiesta, but our favourite Zetec trim gives you everything you need including alloy wheels, Ford's Sync voice control and Bluetooth system, a heated windscreen and classy bodywork upgrades.

3. Easy to live with

One of the reasons why superminis slot into our lives so well is that they're so easy to use every day, and the Fiesta is a great example of this. You'll wonder after a short while how you ever did without it.

2. Big-car space

The Fiesta's boot is of an average size but is usefully deep and will hold the weekly shop without too much trouble. The rear seats can also drop down to increase dramatically the available space.

One of the advantages of owning one of the best-selling cars in the country is that if something does go wrong, parts are easy to come by – and almost every garage will have worked on a Fiesta before. Don't worry, though, because Ford's reliability is above average.

We'd avoid the entry-level Style version of the Fiesta – it misses out on crucal kit such air conditioning and remote central locking. The basic 1.25-litre petrol engine should also be avoided – with 59bhp, it's simply too underpowered for a car of this size, and upgrading to the more powerful 80bhp doesn't cost much. Also be aware that while the interior of the Fiesta feels solidly built, it's lacking in some of the more premium touches you'll find in rivals such as the Mini or Volkswagen Polo.

What about buying used?

Used Ford Fiestas are a great bargain, and because there are always plenty for sale, prices are relatively low. If you buy one, expect the same sweet handling characteristics, low running costs and reasonable practicality that we've come to expect from this car.

Our recommendation would be to opt for the 81bhp 1.25-litre petrol engine if you can, although there are plenty of more powerful options if you're looking for a more entertaining drive. If diesel is what you're after, the 1.4-litre version with 67bhp is your best bet. In terms of specification, Style models come with most of the kit you'll want.

Reliability for this generation of Fiesta has been good so far, but as always do your research and insist on a thorough test drive if you plan to buy. Fiestas of this generation can be bought from around Β£2500.
