The Hyundai i10 is our favourite city car of 2016. Against a host of impressive rivals, including the Skoda Citigo, VW Up, Seat Mii and Suzuki Celerio, the i10 comes out on top thanks to its low price and small dimensions.
10 reasons to buy a Hyundai i10
10. Make short work of parking
The i10's light steering makes it easy to drive around town, and is especially helpful when it comes to parking. Elsewhere the i10's handling shines, even if it's not as much fun to drive as rivals like the VW Up.
9. Space for four
In most city cars, space for rear-seat passengers is at an absolute premium. In the i10 that's not the case; two adults can sit comfortably in the back. The wide doors and tall roof also make getting in and out easy.
8. Quiet engines
Whichever engine you go for in the i10, be it the three-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol or the larger 1.2, both are impressively quiet. Compared with other city cars, the i10 is also one of the best at keeping wind and road noise to a minimum.
7. Petrol power
Unsurprisingly, there's no diesel option in the i10. We'd go for the 1.2-litre, four-cylinder petrol version because it's more relaxing to drive than the lower-powered 1.0-litre model, and it makes short work of accelerating along city streets.
6. Functional inside
The i10's interior isn't the last word in luxury, but it is well laid out and decked out with plastics that feel functional, if not overly premium. Watch out for some sharp edges around the base of the seats, though.
5. Pothole king
The i10's ride deals with almost all the imperfections that UK roads can throw at it, but its suspension is also firm enough to minimise body roll. Generally speaking, this is a comfortable car for both long and short journeys.
4. Well packaged
The i10's boot is bigger than most of the cars you'll find in this class; you should be able to fit a lightweight buggy in it without any trouble. The rear seats fold forwards, too, creating a larger load space.
3. Find a deal
With the range starting from £7995, the i10 is not the cheapest car in this class, but Hyundai regularly offers deposit contributions and finance deals, which should bring your monthly payments down.
The i10 has a solid reputation for being a reliable city runabout - and Hyundai's five-year warranty package only sweetens the deal.
1. Classy inside and out
If you can stretch to our recommended Premium trim, you'll get alloy wheels, Bluetooth connectivity and four speakers for the stereo instead of two. In this form, the i10 feels like a classy car.
As with the old i10, the current model falls down when it comes to safety. All models get six airbags, but the i10 only scored four out of five when tested by Euro NCAP. Entry-level S trim is also very basic, and only gets you electric front windows and central locking.
What about buying used?
The previous Hyundai i10, launched in 2008, didn't quite reach the same heights as the current car, but it was still considered to be among the best options for buyers on a budget. The tiny i10 isn't massively practical and misses out on some key safety gear, but there's no denying it's a lot of car for the money.
The good news for buyers is that whichever version of the i10 you choose, you can expect excellent fuel economy; even early models return 56.5mpg.
Hyundai has a fairly solid reputation for reliability, too, with the only complaints coming from owners relating to the seatbelt mounts becoming squeaky, the fuel gauge becoming stuck and the foglight switch coming off.
Opt for the more powerful 1.2-litre petrol engine if you can, as this makes light work of both urban and motorway routes.
