This is the new Citroen Grand C4 Picasso, which promises to give the spacious seven-seat MPV more practicality and efficiency, as well as an improved ride and handling set-up compared with the current car.
The Grand C4 Picasso is built on the same chassis that underpins the new Citroen C4 Picasso and Peugeot 308. The use of lightweight materials means it weighs around 100kg less than its predecessor, which helps to offer significant fuel economy and CO2 emissions improvements.
The styling takes its cues from the C4 Picasso, with slim daytime running lights at the leading edge of the bonnet and separate headlights positioned lower down.
CO2 emissions have been cut across the range by an average of 30g/km; with the smallest engine available the 91bhp e-HDi Airdream and the new automatic gearbox, the Grand C4 Picasso emits just 98g/km with fuel economy of 74.3mpg.
Other engines on offer will include 113bhp and 148bhp diesels, with stop-start technology as standard. We also expect the Grand C4 Picasso to get the 118bhp and 154bhp petrol units in the C4 Picasso, although this has not yet been confirmed.
The current Grand C4 Picasso's ride isn't the best in class, but Citroen says the new platform allows for a different set-up that greatly improves comfort and body control. We were impressed by the results when we tested the new C4 Picasso, which bodes well for the seven-seat model.
Citroen also boasts that the car has more glass surface than any other rival in the segment, which should make it feel bright and airy inside the cabin. The panoramic windscreen is a standard feature, while a full glass roof will be an option.
The interior will take much of its design from the C4 Picasso, so expect a smart, uncluttered dashboard with a dual-screen set-up comprising a seven-inch touch-screen that controls most of the car's functions, and a 12-inch panoramic HD unit that displays the satellite-navigation and other driving information.
The current Grand C4 Picasso has a vast and flexible cabin, and the new model is set to improve on this with a longer wheelbase that gives even more space in the second and third rows of seating.
Boot capacity will be generous, too you'll get 645 litres with the third row folded flat, which extends to more than 700 litres with the second row in its forward position. All seats in the second and third rows can be slid and folded individually.
All Grand C4 Picasso models will have 16- or 18-inch alloys. Standard equipment is likely to include Bluetooth and a six-speaker stereo with USB input.
You'll be able to spec the new car with a range of safety features, including adaptive cruise control, forward collision and lane departure warnings, blind-spot monitoring and Citroen's Intelligent Traction Control, which has variable settings for different road conditions.
Optional kit will include a comfort pack that adds a massage function for the driver and passenger, and gives the latter the ability to recline their seat to mimic a business class flight experience.
A system that uses four cameras around the car to give a virtual 360-degree view of the surroundings, designed to make parking and low-speed manoeuvring easier and safer, will also be available.
Exact prices and specifications have not yet been announced, but we expect the car to cost around 1500 more than the C4 Picasso, which means the starting price could be under 20,000. UK sales should commence in early 2014.
