The all-new 2013 Volkswagen Golf has been revealed at an exclusive preview in Berlin.
It's longer, lighter and better equipped than the current VW Golf and is available with a range of high-tech options.
What Car? editor-in-chief Chas Hallett attended the event and viewed the new Volkswagen Golf Mk7 first-hand. Here are his thoughts:
'The big question is has the new Golf maintained the standards set by its predecessors? Yes it has. Alhough the harsh truth is that its only as good as it needs to be.
The cabin is better laid out that the outgoing car and the infotainment technology is several leagues ahead. But the perceived quality of all the bits you see and touch haven't really moved forward. If you climbed into a new Audi A3 or a Volvo V40 you can see where your extra money was going.
That said, it still feels marginally more classy than any of its peers - and the design is more restrained than, say, a Ford Focus too.
2013 VW Golf cabin is as classy as its predecssor's; more interior space
The levels of comfort and driving position seem spot on and interior space is better. On paper rear headroom is diminished, but you wouldnt really know it.
Climbing in the back is now less difficult than it was before and once installed you've got more kneeroom.
Does the cabin look and feel best in class? Yes but these days the Golf is only just ahead, rather than being way out in front.'
