The face-lifted Volkswagen Touareg was revealed earlier this year at the Beijing motor show, and Volkswagen has just announced prices and specifications, ahead of order books opening on August 27. First UK deliveries are expected in November.
What is it?
VW has opted for evolution rather than revolution with the Touareg, which means current owners will find the new car a familiar experience.
Styling changes to the Touareg are limited to a new grille, which now has four slats instead of the previous car’s two. Below this there is a redesigned lower bumper and spoiler. The rear bumper has also been tweaked and now features integrated LED foglights. Completing the look are new 18-, 19- or 20-inch alloy wheel designs and five new paint options.
Inside there are new wood trim and leather options.
How good are the rivals?
The VW Touareg faces stiff competition in the large SUV category.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee offers proper off-road credentials and prices start at less than £40,000, although a poor ride and disappointing cabin quality lose it points.
The BMW X5 offers excellent on-road dynamics and the option of seven seats, but the German rival is more expensive, with equivalent 3.0-litre diesel models starting from £48,000.
Land Rover’s Discovery offers the most cabin space with seating for up to seven adults. Its 3.0 TDV6 is smooth and refined, as is the car's ride, plus it has excellent off-road capabilities. It is expensive to run, though.
What engines can I choose from?
VW has simplified the engine options for the Touareg, dropping both the V8 diesel and the V6 petrol hybrid. This leaves just the 3.0-litre V6 TDI in two states of tune.
Both versions come with engine stop-start and battery regeneration technology as standard. Also standard is an eight-speed automatic gearbox, which has a coasting function that decouples the engine from the gearbox.
These changes mean the 201bhp model's emissions are down 11g/km to 173g/km, while economy is 2.4mpg better at 42.8mpg.
The higher-powered version now has 254bhp - an improvement of 13bhp - while emissions are cut by 15g/km to 174g/km, and economy is up to 42.8mpg, an improvement of 3.6mpg.
All engines meet Euro6 emissions requirements.
How much equipment does it come with?
All new Touaregs now come with xenon headlights, lumbar adjustment on both front seats and an automatic post-collision braking system.
Three trim levels are available, starting at SE. This includes 19-inch alloy wheels, satellite-navigation with an 8.0-inch touchscreen, a DAB radio, Bluetooth, dual-zone climate control, leather seats, front fog lights, front and rear parking sensors, plus chrome roof rails.
The Escape model is tailored for those who want more off-road ability. It features an enhanced four-wheel-drive system with a 50:50 torque split, plus mechanical locking centre and rear differentials. The suspension is raised for better ground clearance and the underbody has extra protection. Added to this are 18-inch alloy wheels, an enlarged, 100-litre, fuel tank – as opposed to the SE’s 85-litre tank – headlight washers and black roof rails.
R-Line trim has a more sporty bias and comes with bespoke bumper designs, sill and wheel arch extensions, lowered sports suspension and 20-inch alloy wheels. The sporting theme continues inside with a black roof lining, R-Line sports seats and aluminium pedals. Equipment upgrades for the R-Line include LED daytime running lights, a panoramic glass sunroof, a heated steering wheel, a keyless entry and start function and a powered tailgate.
How much will it cost?
The new Touareg range starts at £43,000 for the 201bhp 3.0 TDI SE. The same engine in the R-line model costs £46,000.
The higher-powered 254bhp engine costs an extra £1500, bringing the price of the SE to £44,500 and £47,500 for the R-Line.
The Escape model is offered only with the 254bhp engine and is priced at £44,700.
Can I get a discount?
We'd expect so. VW dealers have always been very forthcoming, with discounts of up to 14% on the Touareg, and we would be surprised if this wasn’t the case for the new car.
