The Infiniti Q60 will cost from just under Β£34,000 when sales of the new car start in October.

The Q60, which replaces Infiniti's older G37 coupΓ©, will rival the BMW 4 Series, Audi A5 and Mercedes C-Class CoupΓ©. It was first unveiled at the Detroit motor show earlier this year.

Infiniti's models aren't typically well rated by What Car?, but the Japanese car maker is hoping the new Q60 will become a contender for buyers seeking a stylish performance coupΓ©. As a reminder, our current CoupΓ© of the Year is the Audi TT, although that car is significantly smaller than the Q60.

What is it?

The Infiniti Q60 is the Japanese company’s sports coupΓ©. It is slightly bigger than its precedessor, the G37, and it has bodywork that has been honed for aerodynamic efficiency and high-speed stability during strong crosswinds. Infiniti says the car has been engineered "to deliver a truly engaging sports coupΓ© experience, with a unique balance of compliant ride and agile handling."

What engines can I choose from?

Buyers will have two engines to choose from in the Q60: a 2.0 and 3.0-litre petrols. The 205bhp 2.0-litre is likely to take the majority of sales in this country . This engine returns a claimed 28.8mpg and emits 154g/km of CO2 - meaning you'll pay Β£185 per year in tax as a private buyer.

Those looking for a more performance-oriented option will have to wait a few months, because the 395bhp 3.0-litre V6 engine won't be offered until later this year. All engines come with a seven-speed automatic gearbox as standard.

The Q60 has intelligent all-wheel drive - meaning that while it is rear-wheel drive for most of the time, up to 50% of the available traction can be sent to the front wheels if required.

How much will it cost?

Although the full specification has yet to be announced, we do know that prices for the Q60 will start at Β£33,990 for the 2.0-litre petrol model - making the Q60 more expensive than the BMW 4 Series, Mercedes C-Class CoupΓ© and Audi A5, which start from Β£30,260, Β£31,585 and Β£31,910 respectively. The more powerful 3.0-litre V6 version is likely to cost considerably more.

How good are its rivals?

Very good indeed. The BMW 4 Series is worthy of consideration by anyone who is in the market for fast, good-looking, keen-handling four-seat coupΓ© - likewise the Mercedes C-Class CoupΓ©. The Audi A5 coupΓ© isn’t a match for the BMW when it comes to handling, but it is nevertheless classy, solidly built and desirable.
