Since it won this award last year, Porsche has binned the Boxster's glorious flat-six engines and replaced them with more frugal but less characterful four-cylinder turbo units. This class couldn't be more open, then, with the new Audi R8, BMW M2, and McLaren 540C, not to mention Porsche's own Cayman and 911, all in contention.

This year, the Electric Car of the Year Award is only open to cars that qualify for the Government's maximum £4500 electric vehicle grant, so although the Passat Estate GTE remains a very practical choice, its limited electric-only range (31 miles) rules it out. Cars that could win include the all-new Hyundai Ioniq, the freshly improved Renault Zoe and the hugely desirable Tesla Model X.
