In addition to our reigning champion, the sporty MX-5, the 2017 Convertible of the Year Award could go to the Audi TT Roadster, Fiat 124 Spider, Rolls-Royce Dawn or one of two new Mercedes: the C-Class Cabriolet and S-Class Cabriolet.

Audi TT 2.0 TFSI 230 Sport
No car has won more What Car? Awards than the Audi TT, but Audi itself has had a crack at dethroning it, with the new A5 Coupé, and you can now buy new coupé versions of the Mercedes C-Class and S-Class. Another strong contender is the gorgeous Aston Martin DB11.

Porsche Boxster 2.7
Since it won this award last year, Porsche has binned the Boxster's glorious flat-six engines and replaced them with more frugal but less characterful four-cylinder turbo units. This class couldn't be more open, then, with the new Audi R8, BMW M2, and McLaren 540C, not to mention Porsche's own Cayman and 911, all in contention.

Electric car
Volkswagen Passat Estate GTE
This year, the Electric Car of the Year Award is only open to cars that qualify for the Government's maximum £4500 electric vehicle grant, so although the Passat Estate GTE remains a very practical choice, its limited electric-only range (31 miles) rules it out. Cars that could win include the all-new Hyundai Ioniq, the freshly improved Renault Zoe and the hugely desirable Tesla Model X.
