2017 Mercedes-AMG S63 review - verdict
While it's difficult to work out what the point of the Mercedes-AMG S63 is, that doesn't mean this updated version isn't as charming as it is barmy...
Let’s be realistic. Can we really endorse the Mercedes-AMG S63, a large limousine that accelerates with the urgency of a nuclear-powered Queen Mary 2 in a vacuum and handles almost as adroitly as a Mercedes-AMG C63 but is pricier, less quiet and not as comfortable than a regular S-Class?
Not really. Which does rather beg the question: what’s the point of it? Objectively, there isn't one. But it’s not the only fast limo out there – so, next to those rivals, is it any good?
Indeed, it is. Sure, it doesn’t ride perfectly, but it’s still very comfortable by performance car standards and pretty economical, too – with little effort, we saw more than 25mpg on the trip computer during a motorway run. From a 604bhp, two-tonne machine, that is pretty impressive.
If you are in this market, then think about the BMW M760i, which is an awesome cross-country mile-muncher. But if you fancy something that’s altogether more thrilling, then the S63 should be at the top of your list.
