There are plenty of Vauxhall Insignias on UK roads - it's a popular company car, but it falls short in areas such as refinement and practicality compared with its chief rival, the Ford Mondeo.

The current Insignia is nearing the end of its life, though, and Vauxhall will be putting a brand new Insignia into UK showrooms late next year. The new model will be larger, lighter and smarter than the current car.

What is it?

The overall length of the Insignia is growing, and that means an increase in interior space for both passengers and luggage. Its design is expected to be evolutionary rather than revolutionary - the current Insignia already offers stylish looks inside and out, so Vauxhall will be sticking with what it knows works for UK buyers.

There will be subtle changes, though, in particular a more sloping roofline and a wider rear that's designed to provide easier access through the rear doors.

Vauxhall is expected to carry over the majority of the current Insignia's engine range, but with some additional units added to the line-up.

Most important is a new 1.6-litre CDTi diesel, which replaces today's 2.0-litre engine. The 1.6 diesel will be offered in a range of outputs, starting at around 136bhp and rising to about 170bhp. We currently recommend the 2.0-litre diesel in 140 Ecoflex form, primarily for its low CO2 emissions, but expect the new diesel to be even more efficient.

There will also be a range-topping performance VXR version arriving at the very end of next year, which is expected to come with four-wheel drive.

Also new is an eight-speed automatic gearbox, which is likely to improve fuel economy by around 3% compared with the standard six-speed manual gearbox.

Inside, expect the Insignia to get many of the same features as the latest Astra hatchback. This will include Vauxhall's touchscreen infotainment system and the OnStar assistance service.

What are its rivals?

The Insignia's chief rival is the Ford Mondeo. The latest Mondeo has garnered much praise for its comfortable ride, spacious and practical interior and good refinement. The Insignia has struggled in terms of engine refinement in the past - and that's an area where the new model aims to improve.

Other contenders in this market include the Skoda Octavia, VW Passat, Volvo S60 and Mazda 6.

Anything else I should know?

The Insignia is currently cheaper than all of its main rivals - it's priced from £17,999 - and Vauxhall will be looking to keep that edge.
