The Arteon is a car with plenty of premium-brand polish about it, but in the expensive form we've tried so far, it’s tough to recommend against opponents from Audi and BMW. Both the A5 Sportback and 4 Series offer greater desirability and can be had with stronger six-cylinder engines, while doing a better job of mixing peace and quiet with agility.

Ultimately, Volkswagen needs to do more with the Arteon’s quality and driving experience before it arrives in October to make up for its relative shortage of stature as a maker of leading executive cars. At a more affordable price point, with a less powerful engine and on a smaller set of wheels, there might be more to like about the Arteon, but it remains to be seen exactly how affordable VW UK will allow it to be.
