If we’re honest, the Q5 3.0 TDI will be overkill for most buyers. Not only is our preferred 2.0 TDI Sport model nearly £7000 less, it’s also much cheaper to run, brisk enough and impressively refined. No wonder it’s still our favourite large SUV over £35,000.

But if you go into 3.0 TDI ownership with your eyes open, it’s exceedingly tempting. Yes, you’ll spend more money, but you’re getting an SUV that’s definitely better. If you value a smooth engine and strong performance, it’s well worth putting your hand a little deeper into your pockets.
