Lexus does not expect to sell many of these cars and, for now, it doesn't seem as easy to recommend as the Mercedes, Audi and BMW alternatives.

Compared with other luxury cars, the LS falls short. It doesn’t have the silky smooth ride, crisp handling or impressive technology on offer from the A8, S-Class and 7 Series.

The LS does have striking looks both outside and inside, a decent enough ride and impressive build quality, but the hybrid powertrain and gearbox detract from the overall driving enjoyment. For a car that costs this much – our test car in range-topping Premier trim was almost £100,000 – you would expect better.

Perhaps its closest competitor is the S-Class in S500 specification, which not only undercuts the LS for list price but emits less CO2, so will prove cheaper as a company car. In fact, it's a better car in all areas.
