2018 Mazda MX-5 RF Sport Black review - verdict

There’s no doubt that the Sport Black strikes a happy balance between the SE-L Nav and Sport Nav trim levels; it gets you a few more luxuries inside while retaining the softer suspension of the SE-L. It’s also good value within the MX-5 RF range, especially if you were considering metallic paint.

Unfortunately, its value looks less convincing compared with regular MX-5 convertible. Although a metal roof is certainly more secure than a canvas one, it’s not vastly more refined, waiting for the electrics to do their thing is arguably more of a faff than manually operating the soft top and it's an awful lot more expensive. So, while the MX-5 RF Sport Black is good, a canvas-roofed SE-L Nav makes more sense.
