It isn't just Skoda introducing sporty trims in this class. It's up against aggressive-looking rivals such as the Land Rover Discovery Sport HSE Dynamic, the Kia Sorento GT-Line and Peugeot 5008, but you'll pay thousands more for the equivalent Land Rover and Kia. The Peugeot is slightly cheaper than the Skoda, but is also less powerful and not as rewarding to drive.
But then, none of those sharp-suited models are the picks of their repsective ranges, and that goes for the Skoda, too. Indeed, we'd save money and go for our favourite Kodiaq trim instead: the second-rung SE. Of course, it isn't quite as striking to look at, and for some that'll be a problem. But it's cheaper to buy, still very well equipped and rides more comfortably on its smaller alloy wheels.
Consider, too, that our favoured 2.0 TDI 150 diesel engine (with its better low-down pull, lower CO2 emissions and better fuel economy) as well as Skoda's slick automatic DSG gearbox can both be had with SE trim for some £4000 less. So, head or heart. We'd go with the head.
