However incomprehensible and unpronounceable its name may be, the Yaris GRMN is a likable driver’s car with plenty of attitude and genuine amusement value about it. It’s also plainly one that’s been engineered with thoroughness and care, which augers well for Gazoo Racing derivatives to come.
You’d expect nothing short of ‘thorough’, of course, in light of the fact that Toyota’s asking price for the car is £26,295 – for which you could otherwise have a Mini John Cooper Works and plenty of change or, with a bit of a haggle, even an Audi S1. However, that price doesn’t appear to have discouraged very many would-be owners, since all 80 of the cars that Toyota will bring to the UK are sold.
For those owners, there’s plenty to like about this car and should be plenty to get excited about while it’s lighting up a quiet B-road. The Yaris GRMN plainly doesn’t have the sophistication or breadth of appeal of premium-branded options available for the same outlay, though, and so if you’re in the hot hatchback market right now and you’ve missed it, we wouldn’t be too downhearted. Gazoo Racing’s real meister-pieces are, we suspect, still to come.
