We’re big fans of the Volkswagen Amarok, but will a high-powered 254bhp V6 make it even more appealing?...

2018 Volkswagen Amarok 3.0-litre V6 258PS verdict

Putting this 254bhp engine into the Amarok does give it an extra bit of appeal, making it quick enough to surprise many a sports saloon. And yet fuel economy for this mighty 3.0-litre V6 isn’t that terrifying. A claimed 33.6mpg for an outfit this size is impressive, although any commercial users will pay a flat rate in benefit-in-kind tax regardless of the size or power of their truck's engine, which does make the bigger unit rather tempting.

But – and it’s a big but – it’s only available in the mid-range Highline trim with an automatic gearbox, so the price is more than £10,000 above that for the entry-level 161bhp engine. Ouch.

As such, we do have to favour the lower-powered engine. Although it comes with only a manual gearbox that requires a delicate hand to get the best out of it, it’s perfectly usable, and 161bhp feels more than enough for what you’ll want to get out of a pick-up this size. Save your money for a new pair of boots, y’all.
