2018 Volkswagen Arteon 1.5 TSI Elegance review – verdict
Does the entry-level Volkswagen Arteon 1.5 TSI represent the pick of the range?...
No doubt Volkswagen won’t be overly keen to remind you that the Arteon's premium price tag puts it up against some pretty rarefied opposition, including the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé, Jaguar XE and Audi A5 Sportback. Even so, the Arteon is a fine car in its own right, and although the 1.5 TSI version officially returns 54.3mpg (in manual form) compared with the 2.0 TDI’s 65.7mpg, you have to factor in the fact that the diesel costs £2200 more than the petrol car.
While the 1.5 engine is not the most potent, it is more refined than the diesel variants and significantly cheaper. If you stick to the six-speed manual gearbox, it’s also in the lowest benefit-in-kind tax bracket and, combined with the low list price, makes it a tempting choice for company car drivers. Even so, the more powerful 2.0 TSI 190 remains our favourite version.
