2018 Volvo XC40 D3 verdict

The Volvo XC40 is our reigning Car of the Year, but does a less powerful diesel engine and manual gearbox make it better or just cheaper?...

2018 Volvo XC40 side

The D3 reminds us why the XC40 is our reigning Car of the Year. The more potent D4 engine is still a great choice, but for everyday driving, the D3 is punchy enough and a whole lot cheaper to boot.

Sure, the manual gearbox isn’t the nicest to use, but by opting for the well-equipped Momentum Pro trim with an automatic gearbox, you’re still quids in to the tune of about £3000 over the D4 R-Design. We look forward to trying that version, because it could very well represent the best blend of performance and affordability.
