After a 20 year hiatus BMW has re-entered the super-luxury coupe market with style. Just like its predecessor the new 8 Series is striking to behold, technologically advanced, beautifully built and dynamically astute.

And yet, despite being marketed as a ‘driver focused’ luxury coupe, it still doesn’t seem to have found its identity. You see, these days there are a handful of fast GT cars such as the Porsche Panamera and Mercedes S63 that offer a similarly sharp driving experience, and yet thanks to the wonders of air suspension, ride well too.

It’s important to remember, however, that this is just the start for the 8 Series. With the 840d and a full-fat M8 just around the corner, the best might be yet to come.
