2019 Renault Koleos SUV revealed: price, specs and release date

Renault's largest SUV has been given new engine options, an upgraded interior and enhanced safety kit. Here's everything you need to know...

If you value boot space over bums on seats, a five-seat large SUV such as the Renault Koleos could well end up on your shopping shortlist. The Koleos sits above the big-selling Captur and Kadjar and acts as a flagship for the French firm's range, and thanks to a range of mid-life updates, it's now better to look at, better equipped and more efficient than before.

Kicking things off are two new diesel engines. The 148bhp 1.8-litre option is available with front-wheel drive only and emits just 143g/km of CO2. For drivers wanting more power or four-wheel drive, there’s the larger 187bhp 2.0-litre unit, which emits 150g/km of CO2. Both engines come with a CVT automatic gearbox as standard, and it’s the lower-powered version that's likely to be our recommended choice.

Elsewhere, the Koleos has been given standard LED headlights, a more prominent front grille and larger skidplates to protect the underside. There’s also extra chrome trim to further mark the Koleos out as the range-topping model. And for owners looking to personalise their cars, there are also new alloy wheel designs and paint colours.

Inside, Renault says it has improved the quality of the materials and there are new reclining seats for rear passengers. On the technology front, the Koleos's R-Link 2 infotainment system now supports full-screen Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring, while the car's automatic emergency braking system can now detect pedestrians.

As before, the Koleos is available only in two high-end trim levels, dubbed Iconic and GT-Line. Standard equipment includes dual-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control and a ear-view camera.

2019 Renault Koleos price

Renault won’t reveal prices for the updated Koleos until July, but we expect it to command a small premium over the current car’s entry price of £27,520. Even a modest rise to £28,000 would still make the Koleos a more expensive choice than rivals including the five-seat Mazda CX5 and our reigning large SUV champion, the seven-seat Peugeot 5008.

9. Volvo XC60

Volvo used to be very much a step down from the models of Audi, BMW and Mercedes, both in terms of price and ability, but no longer. The latest XC60 is comfortable, well equipped and has a high-quality interior, plus it won the 2018 What Car? Safety Award, having performed brilliantly when it was crash tested by Euro NCAP.

8. Hyundai Santa Fe

Hyundai Santa Fe side

The Santa Fe is a spacious and practical choice in the large SUV market, with the option of seven seats for larger families. You also get plenty of equipment, with both Premium and Premium SE models coming with plenty of luxuries. We'd stick with SE trim, though, because this gets you everything you're likely to want, including rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control and 18in alloy wheels.

Pick of the range: 2.2 CRDi 200 Premium 7 Seat
