Cupra has experienced several significant firsts in the 12 months since it was spun off from Seat and launched as a standalone brand, having given us its first car (the Cupra Ateca), won its first What Car? Award (2019 Sports SUV of the Year) and now revealed its first bespoke model, the Cupra Formentor.

Developed specifically for the brand, instead of being a faster, rebadged version of an existing Seat model as with the Ateca, the Formentor combines SUV and coupé styling, making it a potential rival to the BMW X4 and Mercedes GLC Coupé.

However, it's also a plug-in hybrid, with a combined output of 242bhp from its petrol engine and electric motor and an electric-only driving range of just over 30 miles (on the new WLTP test cycle).

Other technical highlights include four-wheel drive, adaptive suspension and a dual-clutch automatic gearbox, while the interior is said to feature lightweight, carbonfibre-backed sports seats and a 10.0in touchscreen infotainment system mounted high on the dashboard.

The Formentor is lower and wider than the Ateca, with more pronounced rear haunches to go with its more dramatically sloped roofline, although the two cars are thought to be closely related under the skin.

The new SUV takes its name from a peninsula on Majorca, with Cupra following parent firm Seat’s convention of naming cars after Spanish geographical features.

The Formentor is officially just a concept at the moment (it will make its public debut at the 2019 Geneva motor show next month), but a production version will go on sale in 2020.
