The What Car? Car of the Year Awards have been held every year since 1978, and the long list of contenders for 2023 has just been revealed.
This list is made up of new or updated models from the last 12 months, plus defending champions from 2022. They will compete in 18 categories, with one of the winners going on to be named overall Car of the Year.
To be eligible for a What Car? Award, a car has to have been tested back-to-back with its rivals, both on UK roads and at our dedicated test track.
Underlining the breadth of styles and capabilities of new cars launched in recent years, winners of the overall Car of the Year award have included the Kia EV6 electric car, Ford Puma small SUV, Volvo XC40 family SUV and BMW 5 Series saloon.
