These cars have similar list prices, but haggle hard and you’ll get a much bigger discount on the 4 Series; it’ll end up costing you around £5000 less to buy if you’re paying cash. And despite our experts predicting that the A5 will depreciate more slowly, BMW’s keener finance offers mean that anyone looking to buy on a PCP deal will enjoy lower monthly repayments with the 4 Series.
The 4 Series continues to shine for company car drivers. Lower CO2 emissions and that cheaper list price mean that, assuming you’re a 40% taxpayer, you’ll have to sacrifi ce around £1400 less of your salary over three years. Day-to-day running costs such as fuel are lower with the 4 Series, too.
For this much money, you’d expect a lot of standard kit, and both manufacturers include everything you’re likely to want – although the A5 justifi es its higher price by throwing in a few more luxuries. Neither car has been crash tested by Euro NCAP, but the A5 has automatic emergency braking as standard, whereas BMW charges £370 for it. Security fi rm Thatcham rates both cars as equally good at resisting break-ins and guarding against being stolen.
