The Audi Q3 SUV range has been updated with new equipment and styling upgrades, plus a new Black Edition model, which will go on sale towards the end of this year.

The Q3, a rival for the VW Tiguan, BMW X1 and Mercedes GLA, is already among the best small SUVs to buy. It has a comfortable ride quality and a range of smooth petrol and diesel engines, and its high quality interior is among the best in this class.

For the 2017 model year, Audi has increased the Q3's standard equipment. Gone are the current trim levels - dubbed SE, S line navigation and S line plus - to be replaced by Sport, S line edition and Black Edition equipment levels.

Entry-level Sport cars now get satellite navigation, rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, a 6.5in infotainment screen and LED daytime running lights. Also standard is Audi's Drive Select system, which allows drivers to move between different driving modes that control the throttle response, automatic gearbox and steering.

S line Edition cars get a more distinctive front grille and front parking sensors, as well as LED headlights and Audi's dynamic indicator lights.

The range-topping Q3 Black Edition gets metallic paint, 19in alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, an upgraded sound sustem and black trim inside. Audi already offers similar Black Edition versions of its A4, A5, A6 and A7 Sportback models.

Slimmer engine range

Audi's previous range of six engines has been slimmed down to four, and buyers can choose from 1.4-litre and 2.0-litre petrols, and two 2.0-litre diesels with either 146bhp or 181bhp. The lower-powered diesel engine is currently our pick of the range, offering plenty of pulling power from low down in the rev range while also returning a claimed 62.8mpg.

Buyers can choose from a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic gearbox.

Prices for this updated Q3 start from £26,600 - £450 more than the current car. Compared with other premium SUVs, the Q3 is competitively priced, although it's a lot more expensive than our favourite small SUVs, the Nissan Qashqai or Seat Ateca.
