Our Verdict
There are two great luxury SUVs on offer here, and both are really good buys bought at this age.
As ever, though, we're hugely impressed by the Q7, and that's where our money would go. Not only does it have the smoothest and most powerful engine of the two cars here, and the best ride, but it also has the edge on interior quality. When you consider how buyers of this type of car are likely to use them, it’s the superior refinement, the high equipment levels and the strong diesel engine of the Q7 that really stand out and help seal the deal.
That said, the XC90 is a tad more practical. Space in the rear of the Volvo is better and so is the overall boot volume with the seats up or down. The XC90 is also the nicer vehicle to drive on typically windy British roads, and despite the less refined engine, it is more economical. It might finish second here but we wouldn't blame you a jot if you were tempted by its many charms.
