Audi SQ5 and Mercedes-AMG GLC 43

Our verdict

Truth is, neither of these performance SUVs has a particularly broad appeal. You’ll struggle to get more than 25mpg and you’ll be stopping every 350 miles or so to fill up the tank. But they’re not bad cars; in fact, both impress in different ways.

If you get your thrills from blasting away from traffic lights and listening to a piercing V6 soundtrack, the GLC 43 is well worth a look. It’s even practical and easy to drive when you’re in family mode. However, the SQ5 will quickly catch up through the corners, is smarter inside, has a much better infotainment system, is even more practical and, despite big discounts on the GLC, will cost you less in the long run. Put simply, it’s the better all-rounder.
