The A5 Sportback is closely related to the A4 saloon – a former What Car? Car of the Year – so it should come as no surprise to find that it's very good indeed. In fact, with its class-leading interior quality and strong range of engines, the A5 Sportback makes a great executive choice. It's also pleasingly practical, and our favourite Sport specification gets you everything you'll want, including sat-nav and leather seats.
Our pick: 3.0 TDI 218 Sport
3. BMW 3 Series
For many, the BMW 3 Series is the de facto executive car, combining sharp handling with a smart interior and the best infotainment system in the business. The diesel engines do sound a bit gruff, but the 320d Efficient Dynamics version that we're recommending here offers plenty of performance and very impressive MPG and CO2 figures, so is great for company car drivers.
Our pick: 320d Efficient Dynamics Plus auto
2. Skoda Superb
The latest Skoda Superb is every bit a match for some of the more premium-badged cars on this list. It's stylish and comfortable, and despite being a compact executive car offers a massive amount of space inside. The low CO2 emissions of the Superb's 2.0-litre diesel engine make it a great choice for company car drivers, and it offers good performance with sensible running costs.
Our pick: 2.0 TDI 150 SE Executive
