There are around 8.5 million dog-owning households in the UK, with 99.9% of those considering their pet a fully fledged member of the family. So, what should you choose if you're looking for a car that's as comfortable for Fido as it is for Aunt Frida?

Making the right choice is more complicated than it looks at first glance. So we've come up with our recommendations in six price points (from less than £16,000 to more than £40,000) using our own new car star ratings and a list of dog-friendly criteria created with the help of Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.

For example, a good-sized boot is crucial, while a cream-coloured interior is a big no-no. You might also want to think about tinted windows to help keep your dog cool in the summer, a partition grille to stop them from joining you in the passenger compartment and good air flow to prevent that 'doggy' smell.

If you've got a large dog, you'll also want to make sure they can jump into the boot instead of having to be lifted into it. And, of course, a forgiving but well-controlled ride is a must if you want to stop them from getting car sick.

To whittle our six class champions down to one overall winner, we enlisted the help of a panel of What Car? readers and their furry friends. Read on to find out which car was the top dog.
