Best cars for less than £300 per month
The most common way to buy a new car in the UK is through a PCP finance deal. This type of deal allows you to buy a car for around the same price as a three-year-old one, because you're financing only a fraction of its total price.
If you have a monthly budget of around £300 for your next car, you've got plenty of choice in the market. The cars available at this price point include premium hatchbacks such as the Mini, small SUVs such as the Seat Ateca and even sports cars such as the Mazda MX-5.
Here, we count down the top 10 deals from our Target Price research, which reveals the most you should pay for a new car. Each deal is based on 15% of the value of the car, combined with the manufacturer's finance discount allowance if applicable. All are for three years, with a 30,000-mileage limit.

10. Vauxhall Astra 1.6 CDTi ecoTEC SRi Nav
Target price cost per month: £276 Target price (on the road, cash): £17,936 The deal: 3 years PCP finance with 4.2% APR and a finance contribution of £2000
Chances are that if you're looking at a Vauxhall Astra, you're also looking at its key rivals, the Ford Focus and Renault Mégane. So, why choose the Astra? Well, the Astra is a true all-rounder, offering a fine mix of equipment, low running costs and driving fun. Go for this 1.6-litre diesel option if you regularly do motorway miles; if you prefer petrol, the 1.4-litre turbocharged option is our choice.
9. Mazda MX-5 2.0 SE-L Nav
Target price cost per month: £263 Target price (on the road): £20,490 The deal: 3 years PCP finance with 3.9% APR
Affordable top-down fun doesn't come any better than the Mazda MX-5. It's our favourite convertible car, and its combination of a low purchase price, sensible running costs and comfortable interior means it's even preferable to many other, more expensive drop-tops. This 2.0-litre petrol version is pleasantly quick, too.
8. Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TDI
Target price cost per month: £292 Target price (on the road): 24,681 The deal: 3 years PCP finance with 5.1% APR and a finance contribution of £2000
The new Tiguan's biggest problem is its high list price, but this large SUV starts to make a lot more sense when you can get it on a deal such as this. For starters, it's good to drive and has an upmarket interior which, even in SE Nav form, brings you lots of kit, including parking sensors, three-zone climate control and, as its name suggests, sat-nav. This 2.0-litre diesel engine is our pick of the range, too.
7. Audi A3 1.0 TFSI Sport 5dr
Target price cost per month: £262 Target price (on the road): £20,165 The deal: 3 years PCP finance with 4.5% APR and a finance contribution of £850
We love the A3, and while Audi has now discontinued the three-door model, it's the five-door Sportback that has always been our preferred option. It offers buyers the low running costs and practicality you'd expect from a car in this class, combined with the sort of premium interior usually reserved for much pricier models. The 1.0-litre petrol engine you get as part of this deal is ideal around town, and far from out of its depth on faster roads.
6. Ford Fiesta 1.0 125 ST Line Navigation
Target price cost per month: £213 Target price (on the road): £16,751 The deal: 3 years PCP finance with 2.9% APR
The Ford Fiesta is consistently one of the best-selling new cars in the UK, so it's pleasing to note that it's also among the best cars in this class. In particularly, it's fantastic to drive, and even entry-level models come with plenty of safety kit including automatic emergency braking.
5. Skoda Octavia Estate 1.4 TSI SE L
Target price cost per month: £211 Target price (on the road): £17,474 The deal: 3 years PCP finance with 4.9% APR and a finance contribution of £3000
Few cars can match the Skoda Octavia Estate for outright space – but the Octavia's party trick is mixing that space with a generously equipped interior, great value for money and a range of economical engines. This turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol engine is our recommended choice.
4. Audi TT 1.8 TFSI Sport
Target price cost per month: £248 Target price (on the road, cash): £24,041 The deal: 3 years PCP finance with 6.% APR and a finance contribution of £4000
The TT offers great driving dynamics, an upmarket interior and strong residual values, so it's little surprise that we named it as our Coupé of the Year at the most recent What Car? Awards. The fact that you also get a financial contribution of £4000 here only sweetens the deal.
3. Seat Ateca 1.4 TSI SE
Target price cost per month: £259 Target price (on the road): £20,781 The deal: 3 years PCP finance with 5.9% APR
It's still a relatively new entrant to the small SUV market, but the Seat Ateca has already become one of our favourite small SUVs, knocking the Nissan Qashqai off its perch and being named as our Small SUV of the Year at the 2017 What Car? Awards. This 1.4-litre petrol engine is our pick of the range, and SE trim gets you most of the kit you're going to want. It might still be worth adding satellite navigation from the options list, though.
2. Mazda CX-5 2.0 SE-L Nav
Target price cost per month: £248 Target price (on the road): £22,199 The deal: 3 years PCP finance with 3.9% APR and a finance allowance of £500
The Mazda CX-5 competes against large SUVs such as the Skoda Kodiaq and Nissan X-Trail, but unlike those cars, it doesn't come with seven seats. Instead, it concentrates on offering loads of space for five and on being classier than rivals inside and better to drive. This SE-L Nav model comes with plenty of equipment as standard, too, including climate and cruise control, front and rear parking sensors and automatic headlights and wipers.
1. Audi A4 1.4 TFSI Sport [Leather]
Target price cost per month: £250 Target price (on the road): £23,771 The deal: 3 years PCP finance with 2.9% APR and a financial contribution of £3150
The Audi A4 was our overall Car of the Year in 2016, and it's still the best executive saloon around. At this price point, you can only get the entry-level 1.4-litre petrol engine, but that's smooth, strong and surprisingly economical. Sport trim gets you sat-nav, front sports seats and leather upholstery.
