Alfa Romeo Tonale

Alfa Romeo Tonale front

What Car? deal: Save £1663 on a 1.5 MHEV Sprint, or save up to £2305 on the Alfa Romeo Tonale range | Target Price £34,377 | Target PCP £351 per month

Alfa Romeo hasn't been as quick to jump on the SUV bandwagon as some rival brands, but the Tonale marks a moment of change. It's the firm's second SUV, and it sits below the Stelvio in the company's range as a smaller alternative, and rivals the Range Rover Evoque and Volvo XC40. While it's one of the more engaging small SUVs to drive, it's not as practical or as comfortable as those cars. On the contrary, it is well equipped; this entry-level Sprint version offers full LED headlights, a 12.3in digital driver's display and a wireless phone charging pad as standard.

Audi Q8

Audi Q8 front right driving

What Car? deal: Save £5675 on a 50 TDI Quattro, or save up to £7943 on the Audi Q8 range | Target Price £69,940 | Target PCP £847 per month

If you're looking to marry the practicality and luxury of the Audi Q7 with the svelte looks of a coupé, the Audi Q8 has been designed with you in mind. We like its spacious interior and quiet driving manners; this is a car in which you can cover huge distances in comfort and feel fresh at the end of your journey. The 282bhp 3.0-litre V6 Diesel engine is our pick of the range if you want to munch up the miles with as little impact on your wallet as possible.

BMW iX

BMW iX front right driving

What Car? deal: Save £6461 on an xDrive50 M Sport, or save up to £7731 on the BMW iX range | Target Price £97,824 | Target PCP £928 per month

It may have divisive looks, but the BMW iX is an incredibly capable electric SUV. Our favourite version, the xDrive50, is powered by two electric motors that combine to produce 516bhp, while a 108kWh (usable) battery delivers an official range of 383 miles. That's more than the Audi Q8 e-tron and Genesis GV60 can manage officially. Other appealing factors include its luxurious interior and impressive refinement, which makes it one of the more pleasant electric SUVs to drive.

Citroën C3 Aircross

Citroën C3 Aircross front cornering

What Car? deal: Save £2465 on a 1.2 PureTech 110 Max, or save up to £2546 on the Citroën C3 Aircross range | Target Price £20,035 | Target PCP £236 per month

The C3 Aircross is a small SUV version of the Citroën C3. But while the former car remains a practical choice in the class – particularly if you go for the Max model with its flexible rear seating – rivals, including the Ford Puma and Seat Arona, are better to drive. That said, Max trim is fairly well equipped for the money, and includes LED headlights, a head-up display and a reversing camera as standard.

Dacia Duster

Dacia Duster front right driving

What Car? deal: Save £329 on a 1.3 TCe 130 Expression, or save up to £412 on the Dacia Duster range | Target Price £19,366 | Target PCP £215 per month

It may be the cheapest SUV here, but there's still plenty to like about the value-oriented Dacia Duster. For one thing, it's hard to believe you can get such a spacious car for so little money, and thanks to its efficient engine it shouldn't cost you much to run either. Expression trim is our recommended trim level; it comes with 16in alloy wheels, heated electric door mirrors, a central armrest and an 8.0in touchscreen infotainment system as standard.

Ford Puma ST

Ford Puma ST Powershift front cornering

What Car? deal: Save £2122 on the 1.5 EcoBoost ST [Performance Pack], or save up to £2566 on the Ford Puma range | Target Price £30,924 | Target PCP £391 per month

The Puma ST proves that you don't need to spend a six-figure sum to bag yourself a fun sports SUV. In fact, the Puma ST is one of the best cars of its kind, with a punchy 197bhp 1.5-litre engine that develops power in a pleasingly muscular fashion. We also like its slick and engaging six-speed manual gearbox, as well as its surprisingly practical interior. To maximise driving fun, we recommend specifying the optional Performance Pack; it adds sticky Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres, launch control and a limited-slip differential (for improved cornering).

Honda ZR-V

Honda ZR-V front

What Car? deal: Save £1920 on a 2.0 eHEV Elegance, or save up to £2093 on the Honda ZR-V range | Target Price £37,575 | Target PCP £311 per month

The ZR-V is the middle child of Honda's SUV trio. It sits between the smaller Honda HR-V and larger Honda CR-V in the company's range, and like the latter car it shares its hybrid system with the Honda Civic hatchback. As systems go, it's one of the better ones out there, offering quiet, smooth and efficient progress. On our real-world test route, it returned a respectable average of 45.2mpg, which is slightly more than the Kia Sportage achieved on the same route.

Jaguar E-Pace

What Car? deal: Save £1889 on a 2.0 D200 R-Dynamic S, or save up to £2416 on the Jaguar E-Pace range | Target Price £41,296 | Target PCP £408 per month

The Jaguar E-Pace has stylish looks, sharp handling and a great driving position, but rivals – including the Range Rover Evoque and Volvo XC40 – are more comfortable. More positively, R-Dynamic S comes with a shed-load of kit as standard, including adaptive cruise control, a heated windscreen, heated front seats, wireless phone-charging and plenty of parking and infotainment goodies.

Kia Sorento

White Kia Sorento front driving

What Car? deal: Save £2359 on a 1.6 T-GDi HEV Edition, or save up to £2812 on the Kia Sorento range | Target Price £48,726 | Target PCP £602 per month

The Kia Sorento offers lots of space for seven and is a good choice if you plan on towing regularly. This hybrid version should help to keep running costs in check, while every Sorento is also well equipped. Edition trim gives you all the kit you'll ever need, including Nappa leather upholstery, a customisable head-up display, ventilated front seats, remote park assist (which allows it to drive in and out of spaces without you at the wheel) and a blind-spot monitoring system.

Mazda MX-30

Red Mazda MX-30 R-EV front cornering

What Car? deal: Save £1561 on a R-EV Prime Line, or save up to £2755 on the Mazda MX-30 range | Target Price £33,189 | Target PCP £389 per month

In fully electric form, the Mazda MX-30 is comprised by a poor official range of 124 miles. However, the R-EV plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version rectifies this issue, because it combines a tiny 0.8-litre petrol engine with a 17.8kWh battery and an electric motor to deliver up to 400 miles of driving – 53 of which are possible on electric-only power officially. That's more than the Kia Sportage (43 miles) and Ford Kuga (39 miles) PHEVs can manage.

What Car? deal: Save £803 on an 1.5 T-GDi SE, or save up to £1172 on the MG HS range | Target Price £23,192 | Target PCP £289 per month

Rivals may be more spacious, but there's plenty to like about the MG HS, including its competitive price, plush interior and good balance of ride and handling. It also comes with lots of kit as standard, with even entry level SE versions getting adaptive cruise control and dual-zone climate control. The HS’s 1.5-litre petrol engine (badged 1.5 T-GDi) is also our pick; it's flexible enough in normal driving, although you do need to work it hard to get any real performance out of it.

Nissan Qashqai

What Car? deal: Save £3317 on a 1.3 DiG-T MH N-Connecta, or up to £4306 on the Nissan Qashqai range | Target Price £28,573 | Target PCP £258 per month

The Nissan Qashqai is one of the best-selling family SUVs in the UK, and for good reason: it's a great all-rounder that's practical, comfortable and a smart inside. N-Connecta trim is our recommended trim; it includes a 12.3in digital driver's display, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, dual-zone climate control, ambient interior lighting and keyless entry as standard.

Red Peugeot 2008 front right driving

What Car? deal: Save £3376 on a 1.2 PureTech 130 Allure, or up to £5590 on the Peugeot 2008 range | Target Price £23,994 | Target PCP £267 per month

Peugeot's take on the small SUV offers a classy interior, plenty of standard kit and cheap running costs. That's helped by the efficient 129bhp 1.2-litre petrol engine, which is a great fit for the 2008; it averaged an impressive 47.3mpg during our real-world driving tests. Overall, though, it's let down by heavy depreciation and a high price, which is why our discount is worth paying attention to.

Renault Austral

What Car? deal: Save £2870 on a 1.2 E-Tech FHEV Techno, or up to £3252 on the Renault Austral range | Target Price £31,825 | Target PCP £327 per month

If you're looking for a family SUV that sips rather than guzzles fuel, the hybrid-powered Renault Austral is a good option. During our real-world driving test, it managed an impressive 49.4mpg on average, which is more than the Kia Sportage and Honda ZR-V achieved during the same test. In other areas, the Austral has a smart and reasonably practical interior, but it can’t quite match the Sportage for comfort, quality or boot space.

Seat Arona

What Car? deal: Save £3372 on a 1.0 TSI SE Technology, or save up to £4639 on the Seat Arona range | Target Price £20,143 | Target PCP £262 per month

The Arona might be Seat's smallest SUV, but it's surprisingly spacious inside and great to drive. There's a wide range of impressive engines available, too, although we think the mid-level 108bhp 1.0 TSI 110 is the best option. It doesn’t cost much more than the 94bhp version, and yet it pulls better from low revs and it feels more energetic in every situation. SE Technology trim is also brilliant value; it comes with a digital driver's display and a 9.2in infotainment screen as standard.

What Car? deal: Save £2185 on a 1.5 TSI 150 SE L, or save up to £3072 on the Skoda Karoq range | Target Price £29,370 | Target PCP £293 per month

Looking for a family SUV that does it all? Then how about a Skoda Karoq, which combines superb space with a comfortable ride and plenty of standard kit. For the best value, we think it's worth going for the mid-level 1.5-litre petrol engine and SE L trim. The latter is very well equipped for the money, and includes a digital driver's display, all-round parking sensors and a rear-view camera as standard. It also comes with Skoda's clever VarioFlex seats, which split in a 40/20/40 configuration and slide and recline independently from one another.

Suzuki Vitara

Suzuki Vitara 2022 front right tracking

What Car? deal: Save £3603 on a 1.4 Boosterjet 48V Hybrid SZ-T, or save up to £3697 on the Suzuki Vitara range | Target Price £21,246 | Target PCP £263 per month

The Suzuki Vitara can represent real value for money, thanks to its high levels of equipment and spacious interior. It's also has a range of capable engines, including this mild hybrid 1.4-litre petrol unit. It's our preferred engine option; on the whole it's quite sprightly, nipping from 0-62mph in 9.5 seconds. However, the overall driving experience is let down by overly light steering and poor refinement.

Toyota BZ4X

Toyota bZ4X cruising

What Car? deal: Save £2555 on a FWD Motion, or up to £2911 on the Toyota bZ4X range | Target Price £42,655 | Target PCP £407 per month

The electric SUV class is hotly contested, and the Toyota BZ4X is a relatively strong contender. It’s well built, good to drive and roomy in the back, plus you get a 10-year warranty if you take your car to a Toyota dealer for an annual health check. We recommend going for the front-wheel drive version on account of its 317-mile official range, which is more than the four-wheel drive versions can manage. That said, a real-world range of around 250 miles is more realistic.

Vauxhall Grandland

Vauxhall Grandland GSe front right driving

What Car? deal: Save £4293 on a 1.2 Turbo GS, or save up to £6196 on the Vauxhall Grandland range | Target Price £27,587 | Target PCP £335 per month

Being based on the same underpinnings as the Peugeot 3008, the Vauxhall Grandland offers many of the same practicality benefits as that car. It drives fairly well, too, and has enough space for most families. It's worth noting, though, that in most areas the Grandland is outshone by the Kia Sportage and Skoda Karoq – both of which have nicer interiors and are better to drive. However, the Grandland does win back some brownie points when it comes to value, especially once you factor in our discount.

The Touareg has just been updated with a tweaked design, new interior tech and some new engine options. As before, though, it remains spacious inside and good at towing, and is comfortable even at motorway speeds. Our recommended engine is the 228bhp 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine; it gives you all the grunt you could ever need, officially sprinting from 0-62mph in 7.7 seconds.
